Sedo report: Buying new domain names can be an economical alternative to search engine optimization

Not surprisingly, the “.com” top-level domain dominates sales in the secondary domain name market with a 51% share, according to a report issued this week from Sedo, operator of a global domain name marketplace. But sales of domain names based on country codes for Germany (.de) and the U.K. (.co.uk) were also strong, representing 18% and 6%, respectively, of total sales.

Many sales of domain names with the “.de” and “.co.uk” extensions were to U.S. companies or other entities outside the German and U.K. markets wishing to sell into those markets, said Jeremiah Johnston, chief operating officer for Sedo, in an interview. Johnston noted that a company might buy its own name or a keyword search term related to its business in various country code domains.

“Some people buy domains less as a placard or a storefront but more as marketing tools,” said Johnston.

But for domain names associated with some other countries, it’s a different story. Colombia’s “.co” extension, for example, represented 2% of Sedo’s 2010 sales, reflecting the country’s successful efforts to market “.co” domain names as an alternative to “.com.”

Whither “.ly”?

Perhaps surprisingly, domain names with the “.ly” extension were not among Sedo’s Top 10, indicating sales well below 1% of the total. Domain names with that extension have gained popularity as an alternative means of reaching sites whose traditional web addresses are too long to easily fit into a typical Twitter post. But as Johnston explained, “Link shorteners are relevant to a group of people but not enough to make the needle move on a site like ours.”

Sedo facilitated domain name sales valued at $21 million for the first quarter of 2011, with an average price of $2,000. Investing in the right domain names often can have a better payoff than an equivalent investment in search engine optimization, Johnston said.

Coś w tym jest, bo ostatnio dostałem zapytanie o jedną z moich domen .co.uk właśnie zza wielkiej wody. Inna sprawa, że wcześniej pytali o nią Włosi :)
